Being Gary Fisher

Being Gary Fisher And The Bicycle Revolution
by Gary Fisher with Guy Kesteven

Meet Gary Fisher. The maverick kid bike racer who cycled straight into the Acid Test scene and lit up the Grateful Dead gigs, the relentless tinkerer who transformed an industry and sold mountain biking to the world and the visionary who’s still working flat-out every day to prove that bikes are the answer to a healthier, happier future for everyone.

A collaboration with cycling writer Guy Kesteven, Being Gary Fisher and the Bicycle Revolution is an autobiography of sorts. It’s also a mind-blowing trip of ingenious innovation, dogged determination and boundless energy. Get caught up in Gary’s crazy tales and his lifelong mission to invite everyone to the greatest dance on earth.

Author biography – Guy Kesteven

I’ve always been more into industrial punk than the Grateful Dead but I’ve been hooked on cycling since riding in the grocery box of my mum’s bike. A decade of road escapes turned off road with early MTBs, until I was selling Gary Fisher bikes to help fund my way through college. Swerving away from archaeology to MTB media meant regular and always memorable encounters with the legend himself, whether it was talking handling in the Bavarian Alps, teaming up to race for 24hrs on prototype 29ers or catching up on the latest news in the show halls of Vegas. Gary Fisher was always a part of my journey.

So, the simple, “Guy, I need to write a book…” LinkedIn message around Christmas 2016 was a total surprise. Neither of us had done anything like it before, but we both knew that there was an incredible story to tell and a very important message to get across. The past four years have been the most random writing journey I’ve ever taken, but getting to know Gary better and help get his story, onto these pages has been incredible adventure and privilege. I also learned Gary can still mill a serious gear in a pace line and cook a mean boiled egg.

It would never have transformed from that LinkedIn message to the stunning piece of art it is without the experience, insight and epic patience of Guy Andrews and Taz Darling at Bluetrain publishing and a crazy crew of designers and artists. If you think this is just another book about bikes, then you really don’t know what Being Gary Fisher means…
